Gmail mbox data import method

Explanation of the procedure for importing mbox data obtained by the G Suite (formerly Google Apps) data backup method to Mozilla Thunderbird.

For Windows users

If you do not use Thunderbird, please install it referring to "When Thunderbird is not installed".

  1. Installing the extension function tool. Click "Tool" → "Add-on".
  2. Starting Add-on manager. Please click "Details" button
  3. The ADD-ONS screen is displayed, so do an add-on search on the top right of the screen to enter "importexport".
    Automatic search occurs and "ImportExportTools" is displayed as a candidate, so click the item found (ImportExportTools).
  4. "ImportExportTools" is displayed, so click "Add to Thunderbird".

    【Case of earlier version than Thunderbird version 31.4】

    1. Downloading of "ImportExportTools" starts, so save the file anywhere you like. From the gear icon on the upper right of the add-on manager (procedure 2 screen), select "Install Add-on from File" and select the saved file.
  5. The software installation screen is displayed. Click "Install soon".
  6. Restarting Thunderbird is requested, so click "Restart soon".
  7. Importing mbox file. Right-click "Local Folder", and click "Import mbox file" from "ImportExportTools".
    * Import to an IMAP Account is not possible.
  8. Specifying mbox obtained with the Takeout function of G Suite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education). For example, select the all mail (Spam, trash mail...) file, and click "Open". * Import to an IMAP Account is not possible.
  9. Importing is done as follows. Sort imported mail to your own account according to use.

For Mac users
